After installing water pump with its driver and suction and discharge pipework, before starting water pump for the first time, a thorough inspection is necessary. Pumps are often found water pump damaged immediately during a test run because of installation defects. Therefore,   check the following items before startup:

1. Shaft rotation: turn the shaft by hand to check whether it rotates reasonably easily. Excessive resistance, or resistance at certain points, indicates misalignment between the pump and driver or that the packing ( PACKING) is too tight. Correct this before operation.
2. Rotation direction: an electric motor can turn in the wrong direction if its connections are incorrect. Switch it on and immediately off to observe the direction of rotation.

3. Priming equipment: check that it works as designed. For example, when priming with a vacuum pump, does the pumping chamber fill with water when the vacuum pump runs? If leakage prevents the water   from filling the chamber, correct it. If water is supplied   to the pumping chamber from another source or a small pump, check that enough air can be displaced to allow the main pump to start.
Another check during pipe installation is cleanliness, especially in the suction pipe. During installation, scraps of material or sometimes   tools may be left inside the pipe. Such foreign objects can easily cause severe impeller damage.
