Industrial fans, blowers and ventilation systems for workers' quality of life
Industrial fans are essential in every industry because good air circulation is necessary for everyone. Ensuring that a workplace has enough oxygen for normal life requires careful advance consideration of equipment capable of creating a suitable atmosphere. Every industry needs high-quality extraction and ventilation fans that deliver effective air circulation. Energy efficiency must also be considered because this equipment runs longer each day than many other devices; in some places it operates for the full 24 hours. Choosing an industrial fan that meets every requirement is therefore difficult and calls for careful consideration.
Air suitable for work and other activities needs an appropriate oxygen level for human life, freedom from unpleasant odors and harmful pollution, and a comfortable temperature. Industrial fans must provide these conditions efficiently, with sufficient capacity beyond the basic requirement to accommodate future system development. These are the considerations when selecting industrial fans or blowers.
In addition to good air quality, high-quality industrial fans need quiet operation. Workplaces require quiet for concentration, and it also helps people notice abnormalities in equipment or tools. Unusual operating noises from normally quiet equipment reveal problems that can then be addressed. A workplace dominated by loud ventilation fans may feel fresh and cool but is not especially pleasant. Workers do not want to shout conversations or instructions over fans as loud as helicopter blades. Quiet operation is therefore another important requirement.
Industrial blower fans address the requirements described above: clean, fresh air without disturbing odors, removal of unwanted heat and replacement with cooler air. They also operate quietly without disrupting concentration, even in small enclosed spaces where breathing itself may seem loud; that is not the effect of the blower fans discussed here.
Ventilation system
In some industries requiring dry conditions, industrial blowers can remove humidity from a controlled area to provide the environment needed for its activities. Gyms and fitness rooms, for example, need comfortably conditioned, dry air to support exercise. This also helps remove stale and damp odors common in such spaces. Spas, glasshouses and bathrooms are other examples of places benefiting from the drying effect of industrial fans.
Blower fans come in many sizes and designs. Users must clearly define their objectives so that the ventilation fan specifications for the area can be identified. Air-condition requirements differ between spaces and are mainly determined by the area's needs, the air-quality problem to be removed and the surrounding environment. Fan type, installation method and orientation are also important factors in establishing effective air circulation.
Industrial fans have no single fixed rule for correct installation because the conditions of each area differ. Positions, quantity, installation methods and airflow direction are primarily determined by the requirements and site conditions. Air circulation combines advanced technology with an inseparable relationship to its environment. Using many fans does not guarantee excellent circulation. Installing extraction fans without considering airflow direction may provide no benefit and simply waste energy.
A wall opening with an exhaust fan and a ceiling-mounted fan exhausting through large ducts produce different circulation results. The choice depends on the ventilation objective. If the purpose is simply air exchange, bringing outdoor air in to replace stale air, a wall-mounted ventilation fan may suffice. If the objective is to remove contaminated air containing odors, chemicals or combustion smoke, a fan-and-duct system that carries it to a discharge location without disturbing people outside the building is the most suitable choice.
Some places need comfortable cooling, but large spaces may not justify a major investment in air conditioning. Correctly oriented ventilation fans, combined with a building designed for effective airflow and protection against external heat, can provide comfortable indoor air and very good circulation. This approach also saves electricity costs over the long term.
Workplace standards are another requirement related to laws governing industrial building design, labor protection and welfare. Air contaminants, appropriate temperature, occupancy density, smoke produced during machine operation and many other standards determine the requirements for air-circulation systems in factories and other buildings, particularly industries that generate air pollution.
The amount of fresh air required depends on the physical size of the space where the ventilation system is planned. For an initial calculation, determine the floor area and building volume, then divide the room volume by the air-change interval per minute specified for that room or building type. This gives the required air circulation volume, as expressed in the equation:
Room volume (width x length x height) = Airflow volume ( CFM )
air changes / minute
Measurement unit: CFM indicates the capacity of an industrial, extraction or ventilation fan. This value indicates how much airflow the fan provides and is used to describe its performance in a ventilation system. The unit is commonly used in America and Britain. In Thailand the unit used to specify airflow is m3/h ( cubic meters per hour), using the same calculation method but different units. The value CFM is specified on all types of ventilation fans. It is important equipment information and essential for choosing an industrial fan to suit the size of the space. Engineers designing industrial buildings need to understand this principle and use it in their designs.
Effective extraction is only half of the ventilation challenge in an industrial building. The other half is supplying fresh air to replace the exhausted air. Removing more air than is brought in can cause damage comparable to inadequate ventilation and can also endanger workers' lives. Intake and exhaust quantities must therefore be similar to maintain air balance throughout the day.
Finally, readers should consider the characteristics of efficient industrial blowers. Effective ventilation helps create a building filled with clean air, free from pollution, odors and smoke that interfere with work.
First is a service life exceeding 200% because industrial fans operate intensively throughout the day and may run for the entire 24 hours. Maintenance and fan replacement can therefore be difficult. Continuously providing good air requires highly efficient equipment with a longer service life than ordinary fans.
Second, industrial fans should consume less energy, saving both electricity and cost. This is also related to the specifications: high-pressure fans use more electricity, even where the required air circulation is not particularly rapid or large. Selecting specifications above the actual requirement wastes electricity and adds unnecessary expense.
Third, design and control should be simple. Ventilation fans should not be overly complex, and each fan should have a clearly defined role: general ventilation, extracting smoke and toxic substances, supplying air, producing clean dry air or removing odors. Clearly defining the functions maximizes the usefulness of industrial fans.
Lastly, they should reduce long-term expenses, including maintenance, electricity and the cost of the fans themselves. Choosing good-quality industrial fans with long service lives and suitable characteristics for the space prevents escalating future costs, reduces expenses and allows rapid payback.
These are the main points concerning industrial fan designs, selection, operation, benefits and considerations. We believe the guidance above will be valuable to users, supporting workers' well-being, the future of businesses and industries, and clean air for us to breathe.
