Modern electrical appliances offer affordable everyday convenience. A fan is often one of the first appliances, usually 1 unit, bought for a home. This motor-driven cooling appliance has long been used to relieve hot, stuffy weather. Over time, common problems include damaged blades, failed motors and stiff gears. These may sound specialised, but the article describes the following ways to address them.

1. Lubricate to reduce stiffness
If the gears become stiff, the article suggests adding motor oil to the internal motor. Continuous, prolonged operation can cause stiffness, slow blade rotation and a noise resembling rubbing plastic. It suggests applying approximately 2–3 drops of new or used motor oil before operating the fan again.

2. Clean regularly
Internal dirt can also stiffen the gears and hinder rotation. Carefully remove the fan components and cover, then check for dirt, small strings or hair caught in the motor. These add resistance and make the gears stiffer. Clean at least once a week.

3. Loose or insufficiently tightened nuts
Another possible cause of stiff gears and poor operation is deterioration or loosened components inside the motor under rotational load. Loose nuts can change blade rotation and risk damaging the cover. Disassemble and check whether the nuts are secure, tighten any loose nuts with a screwdriver, then reassemble before operating again.
