🌬️ What is External Static Pressure (ESP) and how important is it?

🔹 What is External Static Pressure (ESP)?
ESP is the total static pressure that the fan must overcome. "Outside the fan"
Refers to the resistance of the air duct system and all equipment. connected to the fan
Easy to say
ESP = System load that the fan must push air through.
technical definition
\boxed{\text{ESP} = |SP_{Fan\,Out}| + |SP_{Fan\,In}|}
 • Fan In → negative pressure value (–)
 • Fan Out → positive voltage value (+)

🔹 What does ESP come from?
ESP is caused by Pressure Loss of these devices.
 • 🌀 Air pipe (long / small / rough surface)
 • ↪️ Elbow, Tee, Transition
 • 🔲 Damper, Fire Damper
 • 🧱 Filter, HEPA, Silencer
 • 🪟 Grille, Diffuser, Louver
 • 🧊 Coil cold / hot
The more equipment → the higher the ESP.

🔹 Why is ESP “very important”?
1️⃣ Set the actual air volume (CFM)
 • Higher ESP → Operating Point on Fan Curve shifts to the left.
 • The result is that the wind immediately decreases.
👉 Most of the breath disappears. It is not caused by a broken fan.
But this is caused by the actual ESP being higher than the model.

2️⃣ affects fan selection
Choosing a fan must be based on:
 • Airflow (CFM)
 • ESP (Pa or in.w.g.)
If ESP is underestimated:
 • The fan is too small.
 • The wind did not arrive at the work site.
 • Need to speed up → Loud noise / Power consumption / Short lifespan

3️⃣ affects energy (Energy)
 • Higher ESP → higher RPM / kW required
 • ESP can be reduced by 10–20%
→ Fan electricity consumption can fall by several tens of percent

4️⃣ Checking installation quality
Comparison — meaning
Actual ESP ≈ design ESP: a good installation
Actual ESP > design: hidden losses in ducts or equipment
Actual ESP < design: possible oversizing / a more open damper

🔹 A simple example
 • Design:
 • 10,000 CFM @ 500 Pa
 • Measured on site:
 • Actual ESP = 700 Pa
👉 The fan will deliver less than 10,000 CFM

🔹 How does ESP differ from static pressure?
Term — meaning
Static Pressure (SP): pressure at a particular point
External Static Pressure (ESP): the total external SP the fan must overcome

📌 An engineer's brief explanation
ESP = the load imposed by the duct system
ESP determines how much airflow a fan can actually deliver
Measure ESP as → Know immediately why the wind disappeared.Click here to type a system message.
